Join with other supportive community members in Western Australia and all over the country for the 2010 National Year of Marriage - a year long campaign to support the right of citizens of diverse sexuality and gender to have their relationships recognised equally under Australian Law.
We believe that all citizens of Australia should have the right to choose how to define their relationship, and to have the ability to have their relationship legally recognised in the same way as any other loving relationship. Whether marriage, civil unions or any other scheme - all citizens should have access to the same system. Creating a separate scheme for people of diverse sexuality or gender only further segregates them from the community.
In 2009, more than 10,000 people took to the streets across Australia to support access to marriage for all Australian citizens. Here in Perth, community members held a forum on August 1st 2009 to debate relationship recognition with elected representatives, community leaders and families. On October 11th 2009, community members held a successful Community Picnic & Support Day - with more than twice the turnout of people in support than in the Same Sex Marriage action of the previous year.
2010 is a Federal Election year, and as such this is one of our best opportunities to put community pressure on the Government. By increasing the number of friends, family members and community members visibly showing and expressing their support, we can make this an election issue - and political parties respond best when there are votes involved.
