Get Out Your Vote!
Have you turned 18 since the last election? Have you moved or changed address? Are you not sure if your details are up to date?

The Federal Election has just been called for Saturday 21st August, only 5 weeks away.

Enrolment to vote closes 8pm Monday

Updates to your address or details closes Wednesday

Go to http://www.aec.gov.au/ to enrol or update your details ASAP.

This year's Federal Election could be one of the most pivotal in Australia's history, with the vote so tight that either Labor or Liberal could get in, and the Greens standing to potentially gain the balance of power in the Upper House.

Young people are consistently more aware and passionate about issues of human rights, and are those who will have to live with the aftereffects of the government of today. For those who have been around the block, you know more than most how unique this election is. Lets get our vote out this election and make sure our voices are heard.

Urgent & significant issues will be decided at this election, including:

Sexuality & Gender Equality
Last election we gained important Federal reforms to 85 discriminatory laws against same-sex couples. But we still haven't achieved full equality.

National polls consistently show that the clear majority of Australians support same-sex marriage and Federal anti-discrimination legislation. The rights of trans*, intersex and gender diverse people remain ignored in Australia. At no time do we have more influence on these issues than in the lead up to a Federal Election, when the parties are fighting for our vote.

Climate Change & Carbon Pollution
If the Greens gain the balance of power in the Senate, they would have the numbers to push for a real commitment to carbon reduction. Regardless of whether we believe in the effects of drastic climate change, we need to reduce the pollution & exploitation of the worlds resources for the incoming generation.

Refugee Rights
Australia takes far fewer refugees than most of the Western world, yet with all the fuss we make and the conditions we put them through, you'd think we were being attacked. Our refugee policies are one of the biggest issues this election. Its time to have your say.

Take the Next Step for Equality

In the lead up to the 2010 Federal election both of Australia’s major political parties are failing to commit to any reform or change on these issues, despite numerous recommendations from the Human Rights Commission. Unless our community is motivated to lobby for change, these fundamental inequalities will be left off the Government agenda for another three years. We refuse to let that happen.

Gay & Lesbian Equality (WA) is building a new grassroots campaign in our community. We have worked with some of the top social change organisations in Australia to develop skills and strategies for achieving change in a Federal Election year. Through online lobbying tools, information kits and community lobbying workshops, our campaign aims to build the knowledge, skills and networks needed to make sexuality and gender equality a key topic for this year’s Federal election.

Here are a few things you can do RIGHT NOW to get involved in the movement:

1. Make use of the GALE(WA) Campaign Website!

Get informed about the issues, and learn useful techniques for putting pressure on the government about same-sex marriage, anti-discrimination legislation and gender identity recognition.

You can download a copy of the At the Crossroads publication that was launched on the 13th of June here.

2. Sign up for the GALE(WA) Red Alert list

When something happens which needs a response or engagement from the community, GALE sends out a red alert letting people know how they can contribute. It may be writing a letter to the editor when an offensive article is published, sending an email to a politician when they need to put their vote behind a move for equality, or attending a public event or support.

Sign up for Red Alerts

3. Join the GALE(WA) Committee

Gay & Lesbian Equality is looking for community members to lend their time, passion or skills to the campaign for Full Equality, in the leadup to the Federal Election. If you've ever thought about getting involved in a community organisation, campaigning for equality or human rights, this is your chance!
