In the leadup to achieving reform on issues such as Federal Anti-Discrimination Legislation, Relationship Recognition, and Mental Health Services Reform, we need to create as much visible public pressure as possible to make change. The most effective way of achieving this is to produce content for the media - newspapers, radio and television.
Gay & Lesbian Equality (WA) often get contacted by the media who are seeking real sexuality & gender diverse families, couples or individuals which are willing to be quoted or featured to show the human face of how people are affected by these issues. Unfortunately, we have very few people to put them in contact with.
The Media Contact List
We are asking you, as a community member, to consider joining the media contact list. When the media contact us seeking people to feature, we can pass on your details - and thus we'll be able to achieve much greater and more humane media coverage on these issues.
We understand that being in newspaper articles in the media can be very confronting, especially if you are not out to family and friends. However, to be able to engage public sentiment and achieve change in community and political attitudes towards sexuality & gender equality, it is important that we have human, caring relationships visible in the media. Articles with photos & quotes from couples are much likely to get more space, and be more prominent in a newspaper - giving much greater visibility to these issues. This is one of the most critical contributors to success.
